Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers, health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.

Third Annual Young Athlete Conference: The Lower Extremity

8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Friday, May 17, 2013

This one-day course is designed for PTs, PTAs, ATCs, nurses, physicians and other health care providers who are involved with young athletes to obtain current information regarding the management of lower extremity sports injuries. Topics to be covered include injuries of the hip, knee and ankle as well as prevention strategies, core assessment and strengthening, and return to sport.

Washington University School of Medicine hosted their 7th Annual Sports Medicine Update on July 20 and 21, 2012.   This year’s conference will provide current and state-of-the-art evaluation and management of common sports medicine topics by increasing competence and performance in caring for the school-aged to college athlete.

Extended Deadline:

The District 5 Research and Education Grants Committee is extending the deadline for submission of grant applications to February 6th.  All applications must be submitted electronically.  Due to the extended deadline the review process will be extended accordingly.  All grant recipients will be notified prior to the District meeting.  If you have any questions please contact the Chair of the committee, W. The First Annual Missouri Educators and Student Conference was held on the William Woods University campus in Fulton, MO on February 2, 2013, from 10-3. 

The Missouri Student Quiz Bowl followed at 3:30.  

The conference concluded with the Missouri Student Quiz Bowl for CAATE programs.

March -District 5, Mid-America Athletic Trainers' Association meetingThis year's meeting is Thursday, March 14th through Saturday, March 16th, 2013 at the Double Tree by Hilton Downtown in Tulsa, OK.  Don't forget to attend the MoATA meeting during the MAATA conference. 

Hotel reservations can now be made by going the the MAATA website and following the link there.

The pre-conference workshops for students and Certified Members will begin the morning of Thursday, March 14th. The ACES Preparatory Workshop for Taking the BOC Exam will be offered to students, and while not yet confirmed, the committee is planning on offering a Mulligan Lower Extremity Workshop for Certified Members. More information on both of these pre-conference workshops will be available in the near future.

Please note that the general sessions will be held on Thursday evening, March 14th (6:00-9:00pm); Friday, March 15th (all day); and Saturday, March 16th (8:00am-12:00pm) with the Annual Meeting & Symposium ending after the noon MAATA Business Meeting. Some of the topics for this year’s Symposium include: Learning Blocks on Concussion, Rehabilitation Techniques for the Shoulder and Rehabilitation Techniques of the Lower Extremity; and general sessions on Sickle Cell, Exercise Induced Respiratory Symptoms in Young Athletes, How to Develop and Implement Policies, Nutrition Blunders and the Student-Athlete, and more. There will also be Student Sessions, the Quiz Bowl, Free Communications Presentations, the Hall of Fame and Awards Dinner, and the President’s Reception. A schedule will be posted on the MAATA Website at a later date.

 

Washington University School of Medicine is hosting their Annual St. Louis Soccer Conference on March 2, 2013 beginning at 8:00 am. This year’s conference will focus on lower extremity injuries.

Check out the Lindenwood Leadership Series on March 5, 2013 at 7 pm.  This session features Alan Schwartz, a New York Times Reporter speaking on Head Games: Getting Football and the Public to Understand the Dangers of Sports-Related Concussion.  It is free to the public and no RSVP necessary.
