Athletic Trainers are licensed healthcare professionals through the Missouri Department of Professional Registration's Board of Healing Arts.  Licensure is NOT optional and athletic trainers practicing without licensing or with a expired license are subject to new disciplinary procedures.  Any Certified Athletic Trainer who is hired to work in Missouri, including Graduate Assistants, must apply for and receive their license before beginning their duties.

From Josh Thompson, MoATA Governmental Affairs Chair..............I am writing to update everyone in MoATA, but especially those of you that deal with high school athletics, on the developments involving Missouri’s Interscholastic Youth Sports Brain Injury Prevention Act (HB 300).  This bill was signed into law by Governor Nixon on July 13th.  The contents of this bill does not go into effect until December 31, 2011 and there will be an official rules making  session conducted by state agencies, MSHSAA, and other stakeholders in the legislation in the near future to actually set out the guidelines for the implementation of the legislation.

The biggest question that I am getting right now is how do you proceed at this time if you are working in the interscholastic setting.  The answer is simply that you should still be following the guidelines set forth by MSHSAA in their Sports Medicine Handbook (which can be found at MSHSAA.org/SportsMedicine) that currently has a concussion management policy for your athletes.  I would anticipate that any rules for the legislation will closely mimic what MSHSAA currently has in place.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want clarification on any issues.  I will keep you updated as the rules process progresses of any changes that may affect you in your practice.
